Viviane Sassen (born 1972) is a Dutch artist living in Amsterdam. The thirty-one images, encompassing iconic and more recent ones, wove together the themes recurring in her work: death, mourning, the fear of being alone and the longing for an emotional connection.
The Tokyo 2020 official art posters (20 in total) will be unveiled for the first time to the public at this exhibition.Performance is an independent art form and photography is its constant companion. Some pages in the book have a smaller width, setting up interesting relationships between the images.Viviane Sassen's first monograph, Flamboya brings together photos from various trips to Africa. She is known for her use of geometric shapes, often abstractions of bodies. The images are a mutual portrait - an exchange in which the artist’s and model’s individualities blur, leaving traces on each other. The event, which has grown into one of South Korea’s three largest biennales, has taken root in Daegu a city with a rich culture of photography. The exhibition “Bauhaus and Photography—On New Visions in Contemporary Art” at the NRW-Forum Düsseldorf brings together photographs by proponents of this “new vision” with works by contemporary artists. In the style rooms of the palace of Versailles, Sassen photographed three girls from the nearby town of Versailles: Charline, Blanche and Leila. The exhibition is conceptualised as a focused consideration of how 'the artistic and commercial effected a clear and consistent change in fashion photography'. Sassen’s presence is perceived through her shadow and made tangible by scraps of paper that bear the imprint of her breasts. The opening coincided with Sassen’s participation in the Larry Sultan Visiting Artist Program, a collaboration between Pier 24 Photography, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and California College of the Arts.Viviane Sassen's latest book is her second to focus on the Umbra series and its exploration of the multifarious roles of the shadow in her work.Sketches shows Polaroids made in Africa between 2002 and 2010. 'Experimenting with collages and unique hand-coloured pieces, Sassen creates images in which abstraction and performance intertwine.Of Mud and Lotus is Viviane Sassen's second collaboration with Japanese collective artbeat publishers and G/P Gallery, Tokyo.
