It pretends to shock and challenge, but the talking points of the art at the world’s biggest exhibition come straight from the New York Times op-ed page. There is a portrait of disfigured smears under the recognizable hair (“Trump is ugly chaos”), there is a replica of an empty Lincoln Memorial chair with a whip attached (“America in a nutshell”), and someone actually exhibited printouts of Hillary Clinton’s emails (“He keeps asking for those emails, well here they are!”). Utilizing a deep, rich series of browns and skin tones, Ghenie seems to hint at the human toll, and real impact of Trump’s position of power in global politics, a portrait not only of his figure, but of his deeds and actions. And despite the counter-cultural non-conformism – everything is for sale. ... Benett The White Album © Arthur Jafa/JKA Photography 01:12 GMT, Sep 09, 2020 Here, in Venice, only a few years after Ghenie stunned the city with a powerful selection of works at the Romanian Pavilion, the artist has returned with a new series that makes good on the potential of this subject matter, and charges contemporary politics with his unique sense of urgency.Ghenie’s works draw particular strength and power from his ability to both combine brushstrokes into flurries of activity, and to pull the figure back out from these same motions. The American President seems particularly well-suited for the subject matter of Ghenie’s visceral, energetic brushstrokes, not to mention a wave of hair that looks as if it had already been dragged across the President’s forehead by a brush. Though frankly for much of the art, the legacy aspect is a moot question, as it is already worthless in 2019.Of course, the kicker for the Venice Biennale – and one everyone here must be aware of – is that for all the environmental concerns, both making and transporting these voluminous pieces, as well as attracting millions of visitors in their planes and luxury yachts to the sinking city is likely to have offset any habit-changing impact viewing them had on the audience.
