It weighs 1.5kg.The woman looks at the chicken and the scales and says: “Hmmm, do you have one that’s a bit bigger, please?”The butcher returns it to the fridge and brings the same chicken straight back out. ”We were delighted with the weights at the Butchers Steak & Grill in Elderslie, Renfrewshire — a 10oz fillet, a 12oz sirloin and a hefty 20oz T-bone.And, call me old-fashioned, but isn’t it great to see none of that “grams” nonsense?Those are the pre-cooked weights, of course, and, apart from the fillet, all the cuts of beef at this exciting new steakhouse are served “on the bone” which adds a wee ounce or two (not to mention LOADS of flavour).But just look at the prices. Another snip at £5.50 (the cheapest mussels I can recall).The steaks — unquestionably the main event — were all served with triple-cooked chips, a slow-roasted flat mushroom, a generous stack of beer-battered onion rings and lots of baby vine tomatoes.Sure, it was £1.95 for Keith’s peppercorn sauce — hardly the dearest one I’ve encountered — and my mushroom and pepper butter (a proper little American touch) was 95p. Both, however, were worth every penny.
