I think this would have been a more successful book about "the last american man" had it been written by Jon Krakauer. Which gets really old, really quick. Hallelujah! I often forgot that the time line ends way before my time and found myself rooting for the guy to fix US. Eustace Conway is not only living on his 1000 acres of land, killing his own food and making his own shelter and clothing from surrounding materials- he is surprisingly a well versed businessman, a tI picked up The Last American Man thinking I was going to read about some environmentalist guy livin' out in the woods to prove a point to the world. The best and the breeziest for beating the heat in 2002Words gone wild! Need I say more?Written by Elizabeth Gilbert, before her hit Eat, Pray, Love, this compelling story of Eustace Conway is one I won't soon forget. I also feel a deep empathy with his characters and ideas of life, strict to himself and to others, tired of the the modern box-shaped society with so much consumption and bad - mannered people, exploring the world with incredible adventures, interested in aboriginal Indians, and having a strong connection with nature and spiritual world. I found myself wondering more about the relationship between the author and the subject (as in, when did she sleep with him and how long afterwards did she convince him tI had high hopes for this as it seemed an interesting subject (the life and times of a guy who lives quite literally off the land - a "pioneer" if you will.) Another plus for outsiders like me, it's interesting to know more about American culture with its pros and cons. Glad it's a library book...I picked up The Last American Man thinking I was going to read about some environmentalist guy livin' out in the woods to prove a point to the world. Imagine my surprise when I saw it was written by Elizabeth Gilbert, who wrote the mega-bestseller, "Eat, Pray, Love". This book didn't do him any favors. The classic American man may have fled west after escaping from a harsh father, but this is something else.Given this start in life, Conway's accomplishments, his joy and vigor, seem almost miraculous. What this guy has done in the name of fun, adventure, and self exertion kept my attention through the first halfish. I came across this book some where many years ago and have always meant to read it. It's no surprise that nobody can measure up. It was a random meeting, a freak of fate. He was, Gilbert says, ''facing down the undeniable limitation of the Pacific Ocean, and dealing with the geographical reality of his personal Manifest Destiny: that there was nowhere else to go. Found it to be well-written and interesting, about a real man, Eustice Conway, whose goal in life is to live as naturally as possible, meaning on his land, in a teepee, growing his own food, etc. And so I Googled One day, I happened to watch "Mountain Men" on the History channel, and like just about everyone else watching, I was struck by the visage, skill, and pure oddity of Eustace Conway. I'm fairly certain that I could not stand to be in the presence of Eustace Conway. The life cycles of plants and animals are circular. Eustace Conway’s smaller and more successful journeys may be the exciting part of the book. Title: The Last Just Man (2002) 9.1 /10.
