I keep hoping that this is going to happen for me.I've found myself falling for one of my best friends. Marriage is work and I, like a lot of others, am of the opinion that plenty of marriages fail because people go into it without understanding the kind of work it takes to keep it going. Sometimes I still think of him and wonder if maybe when we're older...but I was way too young.So what I'm saying is, there is almost goddamn nothing that can convince me that marriage is worth it. I've been with him since i was 16 got married at 28 and I still look at him sometimes and just get an overwhelming feeling of gratitude that in order to leave me he'd have to get a lawyer involved. Too often people marry because of pressure from society, friends, or family and this is why there are so many problems with marriage. Heck, even if they hadn't gotten divorced I probably would have felt pessimistic since they would not have been happy and none of the other marriages in my family went well- lots of cancer, early death, alcoholism, and divorce.Every guy I've dated has been way more into the idea of marriage than I have. Now that I am in my 30's, I find that obtaining a piece of paper to prove that you want to spend the rest of your life with another person, is not always the best thing to do.Marriage is a way to show to the world that you either "own" someone or are "owned" by someone; regardless of religious reasons or values. Don't get me wrong it isn't always unicorns and poptarts, but the good far out weighs the bad for me in my situation. Every one of them is around my age.
It seems like you better be damn well sure you're ready to share everything with your SO 24/7 for the rest of your life. I think many younger men aren’t interested in marriage nowadays for that reason and because of hookup culture. It's having a slumber party with your best friend every night.
